Two leading sustainability organizations in our area will host a free solar energy forum in Fredericksburg Tuesday, May 21.
Public Citizen, a regular exhibitor at Fredericksburg’s annual Renewable Roundup and Green Living Fair, and Fredericksburg SHINES, a local organization dedicated to sustainable living, have joined forces to present the event at Hill Country University Center, 21818 U.S. Hwy. 290, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Cost seems to be people’s main concern, and many are surprised to learn that solar is now competitive with traditional energy sources, depending on the time of day. And as more solar panelsgo up, costs come down. Another major benefit: when your private solar panels produce more energy than you use, the electric company buysyour excess energy production!
Speakers at the Fredericksburg Solar Forum will include:
Stan Pipkin—an owner and principal designer at Lighthouse Solar in Austin and a principal at Pipkin, an Austin architectural firm.
Stanley Florek—an expert in software, energy, real estate and project finance. He will address issues involved in bringing solar to the masses such as community solar projects and group buying.

The Hangar Dance will feature big band music by Fredericksburg local Bill Smallwood and“The Lonestar Swing Orchestra.” Attendees can participate in swing dance lessons from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; the band will play from 8:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. New this year, the event will feature a free photo booth by the new local company, 4Keeps PhotoBooth. Tickets are $30/ person; get a $5 discount with the purchase of two nights at the Hangar Hotel. The Hangar Hotel’s Pacific Showroom tiki bar will be available to patrons as well as concessions from the Airport Diner. Those donning a military uniform will receive a coupon for a free drink.

Project Appleseed is the sole project of the Revolutionary War Veterans Association (RWVA), a 501(c)(3) organization. Founded in 2006, Project Appleseed and its volunteers are committed to bringing traditional rifle marksmanship skills and the story of April 19, 1775, to each and every American.
Our goal is to teach the skills that are truly ours alongside the story, engaging each participant in our unique American heritage and encouraging all to become active and engaged citizens.
Pre-registration cost: $80 per weekend, two full days of instruction; $50.00 for one day. Women: $40.00 registration fee for both days, $20.00 registration fee for one day. Garrison Brothers Distillery is the first and oldest legal whiskey distillery in Texas. On Thursday, June 13th, 2013 you can meet with Dan Garrison, proprietor, while sipping fine straight bourbon whiskey and enjoying a four course meal prepared especially for the occasion by Taylor Fraser, Executive Chef at the Fredericksburg Herb Farm.
A meet and greet with Dan Garrison is scheduled for6PM– 7PMin the Bistro Bar at the Herb Farm; specialty bourbon cocktails will be featured during the evening. Dinner will be served, with a straight bourbon nosing/tasting of Garrison Brothers Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 vintages, at7PMfor $99/person (plus tax and gratuity); seating is limited and reservations are required. Dinner will be served in the Farm Haus Bistro at the Herb Farm. The first course, Waygu Carpaccio and Heirloom Tomato features a nice variety of heirloom tomatoes, frisee greens, micro basil greens, ground toasted pistachios, and black olive vinaigrette served with charred parmesan toast. Next, guests will enjoy a Lump Crab and Heirloom Melon Gazpacho (a smooth, light and refreshing trio of melon soup garnished with edible flowers, micro greens, chive and chili oil). The main course will be a Surf‘n Turf Pork Belly and Prawns, a braised caramelized pork belly with bourbon veal demi glace, garlic and butter poached Texas white prawns with lemon chive chimichurri over white truffle potato puree, sautéed fava beans, baby carrots and tomato leek confit. Fried banana croquettes (corn flake crusted and fried bananas) served with salted caramel ice cream and local honey bourbon syrup will be served for dessert.
Garrison Brothers Distillery is located in Hye, Texas, just 20 miles East of Fredericksburg on highway 290. The 150thbirthday celebration of Harper, Texas kicks off at 8:00 a.m. with a COWBOY BREAKFAST by donation followed by a parade beginning at 10:00 a.m., led by Te Sons of the Confederate Veterans Chapter of Fredericksburg Lone Star Rifles Color Guard.
The day’s events include:
· A beard contest
· Dutch Oven Contest (national qualifying event with prize money)
· Extreme Pinewood Derby Races (with prize money)
Exhibits include:
· Flint Knapping with 60 minute DVD by Cary Voss, Ph.D.
· Antique toys
· Antique cars
· Weaving and quilt making demonstrations, with quilts on display
Craft booths include:
· Wood sculpture
· Jewelry
· Photography
· Art prints
· Knives
Here’s Harperhistory books will be on sale as well as others books by local authors. An illustrated children’s book author will be present with her live pony. Children’s games are planned.
Old time photographer Charlie Hooper will offer costumed photographs.
Harper Pioneer Museum will be open all day for tours.
Food vendors and live music all day in the park. Free admission.
